Day 3: Toledo

Toledo, just an hours drive from Madrid, seems frozen in time. Standing atop a hill above the Tagus River, this UNESCO World Heritage site is a very different experience from Madrid’s modernity. Toledo’s wending cobblestone streets, ancient city walls and the well preserved medieval architecture all take you back in time, while the welcoming nature of the city makes it a friendly place for LGBTQ+ travellers.

The architecture and culture of Toledo will strike you as a harmonious coexistence of Christian, Jewish, and Islamic influences. Among Toledo’s sights is the imposing Alcázar of Toledo, a stone fortification from the 3rd century whose panoramic views of the city and surrounding countryside venerate its centuries of stop and start. From there it is off to Valencia, a coastal city with a perfect mix of ancient history and literally futuristic architecture. This thriving LGBTQ city is a blend of warm weather and cultural activity. The contrast could not be greater: Valencia’s old town, with its twisting alleyways and historic buildings, versus the ultra modern City of Arts and Sciences, a complex of striking buildings housing museums, an aquarium and an opera house.

Your Valencia trip should start with a visit to the City of Arts and Sciences. Santiago Calatrava’s likes architectural marvel is a proof of how human can create and innovate. But take time to explore its different draws including its interactive Science Museum exhibits or its marine life immersive Oceanogràfic. Looking for something to change up the scenery? Make your way out to Malvarrosa Beach to hit the shores of the Mediterranean sun, or take a romantic walk along the road.

Head to Café de las Horas, an LGBTQ-friendly gem with weird decor and amazing cocktails. Valencia’s gay scene begins its nightly momentum as the darkness descends. One of the city’s largest gay clubs, Deseo 54 is a loud and lively place with several dance floors, lots of theme nights, and everything. If you need something more laid back for the evening and drinks and conversation, The Muse Bar is a nice place to hang out, both for locals and tourists.

Day 6-7: Sitges

Sitges is the last leg of your Spanish road trip and has been a long time favorite of LGBTQ+ travelers due to its picturesque coastal town. Sitges is just 35 kilometers southwest of Barcelona and is a fantastic combination of beautiful beaches, charming architecture and a bustling gay scene. Next to the fullest gay city in Europe, this small town has built its name as one of the most gay capital in the country.

Our mates at Two Gay Expats did a wonderful video on sitges that you should give a watch! See below..

The beautiful coastline of Sitges is right at the heart of what makes the place so appealing. The town’s main gay beach is Platja de la Bassa Rodona. Enjoy the sun and the sea on golden sands, take a dip in the crystal clear Mediterranean waters or people watch as you relish in the sun and sea together. But there’s also a friendly and inclusive atmosphere on the beach that makes it easy to start up a conversation and make new friends from all over the world.

There’s more to explore beyond the beach in Sitges. Make a walk of a few leisurely hours through the town’s nice streets of white washed buildings and little shops. An art lover will love a visit to the Museu Maricel, in a beautiful seaside mansion, with an impressive collection of Catalan art. We drink local wines and eat fresh seafood along the waterfront with a backdrop of the Anatolian sunset and the Mediterranean falling toward dusk.

There is no doubt that Sitges’ gay nightlife scene really comes alive at night, and it’s on par with much bigger cities. Parrots Pub in the gay district’s heart is a good place to start the night with its friendly atmosphere and great music. For those looking to dance the night away, Organic Club offers a vibrant clubbing experience with top DJs and a diverse crowd. The accepting and celebratory atmosphere of Sitges’ nightlife scene provides the perfect finale to your Spanish road trip adventure.
